I call this craft the Family Signature Ornament because it will easily become the most priceless and signature ornament you’ll ever have. It is an ornament made up of your family’s signed sentiments.
I wanted to do something to celebrate my family getting together around the holidays that didn’t require a lot of cash or time (hey, I have three kiddos under 3). I will ask each family member to either sign their name and/or a holiday sentiment right on the bulb. Each family member can take home a small memento of the holidays.
I purchased clear craft bulbs at my local craft store and found that no matter where I went there was a holiday promotion where the bulbs were 50-60% off. I purchased both plastic (kid-friendly) and glass bulbs. I chose Sharpie’s Oil-Based Paint Markers which can be used on both the glass and plastic bulbs. Click HERE for more information and color choices! This marker comes in fine, medium and bold writing tips.
As for kiddos who can’t yet write, think fingerprints with a non-toxic paint onto a small tag rolled up in and inserted into the bulb. You could fingerprint onto the bulb itself, however I can’t guarantee that it will last.
I will place the clear bulbs and markers in a basket on my family’s table for signing. I will also include tissue paper and a small box or bag for taking the ornament home. What a great conversation starter and reason to gather around the table. There is no pressure of giving gifts that may not fit, be the wrong color or be long forgotten by the time the holiday season rolls around next year. These ornaments will be a reminder of all who gathered with the best intentions to celebrate the holidays together.
While I have presented a few pictures to give you an idea of what the ornament will look like, I will share my finished product after the holidays.
P.S. I included a FREE DOWNLOAD of tags (similar to the PEACE tag shown in the picture) that you can write on and either roll up and insert into the bulb or include in your gift box or bag. Use the tags to capture the names of everyone present, a favorite quote, etc. Click Family Ornament Tag Sheet for the template.
If you would like a copy of a template that you can type into, please leave a comment below. Based on the number responses received I will upload a copy.
P.S.S. Other Ornament Ideas if you have a little more time…
Maybe a paper strip prepared in advanced with a family name + place + year .
Are you a family of one this Holiday? Buy a pack of bulbs and write on each one something or someone you are grateful for.
World traveler? Add a small trinket inside each bulb (e.g. sand, dried leaf, ticket) from your visit and write the place and date.
Write or type up on a small piece of paper the year and the names of everyone who signed the ornament. The ornament then becomes a small time capsule.
